🌲 Passage: Forests of the World

Forests can be found all around the world. There are many different plants and animals that use the forest as their home.

In the forest, small animals eat the fruits, nuts, mushrooms, and insects. Larger animals eat smaller animals. Other animals eat seeds and shrubs. Most animals are scared of humans, but they are never far away. An ant, bat, snake, deer, or turkey may hide among the leaves, sit in the trees or run on the ground.

Many different types of trees live in the forest. Trees drop their leaves during the fall to save water on the floor of the forest. After the animals and plants die, their bodies break down. This makes the earth rich with nutrients.

Forests are fun places to visit. A person who wants to see and hear the real sounds of the forest can walk softly and listen with his or her eyes and ears.

Do you want to help other people but think you are too young? There are many opportunities for kids like you to do this. Some activities may seem small, but they make other people happy.

One activity you can do is to make greeting cards for people in a retirement home. You can brighten their day with a cheerful card. You can also visit them and read your card to them. You can read your favorite book to them, or play a card game.

Another group of people you can help is children in hospitals. You can visit a hospital and play board games with them. You might want to read picture books to the younger children, or give them some of your toys.

There are many things you can do to make someone's day brighter. You don't need money or a lot of skills. You can make a big difference in a person's life just by being willing to spend some of your time.
